In order to know if background backup operations work correctly, it should be interesting to send an email. This email should contain all operation done by a job : copied files, deleted ones, etc. It is very useful to see if documents are well backuped and analyze potential system problem or corrupted files.
Windows notifications are too poor I think and if we are not in front of the PC, we do not see them.
